What should I do before moving to Kentucky?
The decisions that gate everything else come first.
Set your move date and commit to the plan. Work every step backwards from it.
Build your budget. Include the home purchase, closing costs, movers or a truck, travel, and a cushion for surprises.

When should I book movers?
Now, ideally, before the calendar fills up.
Book professional movers or plan your DIY move. Companies and truck rentals fill up weeks ahead, especially in summer.
Compare written estimates from at least two companies. Ask about binding quotes, stairs, long carries, and their policy if your date shifts.
Arrange travel for your area visit. Flights, a place to stay, and a car so you can drive the neighborhoods at different times of day.
Notify your landlord if you rent, and tell your employer your move date.
Start school enrollment if it applies. Contact the district for new-student registration requirements and find out which school your new address feeds into.
What do I need to do 4 to 6 weeks before moving?
The paperwork and packing season begins here.
Sort, donate, and pack room by room. Label each box with its room and a short list of contents.
File the USPS change of address so your mail follows you.
Arrange utility connections for your move-in date. In Bowling Green, BGMU handles electric, water, and fiber inside the city; Warren RECC serves much of the county for electric, and the county water district serves water outside the city. Confirm which one applies to your address.
Gather medical and legal records. Prescriptions, vaccination records, and copies of important documents like birth certificates and deeds.
Make a plan for pets. Vet records, travel arrangements, and a quiet first-day setup in the new home.
What should I handle two weeks before the move?

Schedule disconnection of old services for the right dates.
Pack an essentials box. Chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, tools, and snacks for the first night.
Set aside valuables and important documents to carry with you, never in the moving truck.

Confirm everything one last time: movers, travel, and the utility switchover dates.
Label every box clearly with its room and contents.
Finalize utility switchover dates so services end at the old address and begin at the new one without gaps.

What should I do on moving day?
Walkthrough, keys, meters, and protected floors.
Walk through your new home before the truck arrives.
Collect every key, remote, and garage opener.
Read the meters and note the readings for utilities.
Protect floors with runners or cardboard along the path the movers will take.
What do I need to do my first week in Kentucky?
The two deadlines, then the welcome.
Unpack the essentials and set up the basics: beds, kitchen, and bathroom.
Get your Kentucky driver's license within 30 days of establishing residency, per the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (drive.ky.gov). Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency.
Title and register your vehicle within 15 days of bringing it into the state, at the county clerk's office, with the original out-of-state title and proof of insurance from a company authorized to do business in Kentucky.
Confirm local utilities are running. BGMU in the city for electric, water, and fiber; Warren RECC and the county water district outside the city.
Update your insurance to your new Kentucky address.

A vehicle brought into Kentucky must be titled and registered within 15 days, at the county clerk's office, with proof of Kentucky insurance.
